When customers go someplace to eat, they assume that the place is very clean. They expect the cooking area where the foods are kept to be sanitary. If they don’t find that to be the case they can contact a health inspector to come in and investigate. Serious violations can result in the business being shut down.

Even if you are taking care of all of this as you should, there is another concern you should deal with. Do your best to take preventative measures against various types of pests. Since you will have food items around you may end up with various types of bugs, mice, or rats.

A while back there were videos all over the internet of fast food locations in New York with rats running around in them. That definitely isn’t the type of image you want customers to see of your restaurant. They don’t want to be finishing up their meal and then see a mouse scurrying across the floor in front of them.

You should have an exterminator coming in at least a couple of times a year. Due to the areas where your business is it may be prone to certain critters during various times of the year. They can be flexible to take care of it when you don’t have customers so it won’t become an issue.

You can take measures on your own as well. For example have a device that will capture mice or rats should they get into your storage area. There are plug in sensors you can use as well to keep them away. These give off signals that are offensive to bugs and mice so they won’t stick around.

Cockroaches can be extremely difficult to get rid off so make sure if you see one you take action. Chances are there are many more you aren’t seeing. They can live in a variety of places to do your best to remove them. Keep food areas cleaned up so that they can’t come in and get crumbs. Ants can be a problem too if you aren’t keeping things clean enough.

Occasionally you will see signs that certain types of pests have found their way into your restaurant. You need to always be on the lookout for these unwanted guests. Don’t ignore the signs such as droppings because the problem won’t go away on its own. It is going to be more cost effective to take care of them now. It is important to find someone who has a great reputation for taking care of the little pests. Otherwise you risk losing customers as the word about such problems will spread rapidly.

Having such pests from time to time is normal. It doesn’t mean you are doing anything wrong. You just need to make efforts to prevent it from continuing. If you can find where they are coming in at then you can seal off that area. Generally, it is best to hire a professional to evaluate the situation rather than guessing about it yourself.

Traveling brings with it many different and difficult circumstances. There is a new language, that proves to be a difficult barrier to many and there is a totally new culture. Working through these disadvantages for a tourist can be pretty challenging but rewarding when done. One of the toughest things a tourist has to work through is…food! If you are from the United States, you are going to have a much different perspective on what tastes good then say the European restaurant you are at! There are a few tricks of the trade to finding good restaurants abroad- you just need to be aware of them!

Here is a quick man’s guide to finding a great restaurant in an area where you don’t know the language or the culture!
• Ask a local person! This is the most basic of suggestions but is often the most effective. Most local people would be glad to assist you with finding a quality restaurant. If you can, find a local who speaks your language at least a little bit and they should be able to comprehend what you are looking for! Locals know the good restaurants, the poor restaurants and the ones that will make you sick!

• Look for popularity! Now this tip doesn’t take a lot of time or a lot of knowledge, just observation! If you are in a city where there are streets full of restaurants and shops, just merely see which ones have the longest lines when dinner time rolls around! Chances are the restaurant with the longest line is going to have at least half way decent food!

• Research your area! The internet has opened up many different options when it comes to researching a specific area for restaurants. Not only can you find out how far the restaurant is from your hotel or accommodation, but you can find reviews from other people who have eaten there! Yahoo! and Google offer some of the best restaurant guides online for your convenience; so if you’re looking at a specific area, look on the internet first! Another form of researching is asking your travel agent. Often your agent will have at least a good sense of the restaurants in the area, if not first hand experience!

Finding the best restaurant for you when you are abroad doesn’t have to be impossible or stressful for your vacation- make it a fun part of the excitement that international traveling brings along with it! Follow the tips above to get the restaurant that has your tastes and preferences in mind!

Everybody knows that rendering an outstanding or good customer service is the best way to establish and maintain a business or company in good standing. Your restaurant could have a very friendly ambiance, it could also be unique in some aspect but if your staff and then some other things are the main reason as to how possibly you fail this most important part of handling a business, then it’s just time for you to check back on what went wrong.

A restaurant establishment, especially a new one that is trying to make a statement to the people and its target market always has the tendency to implement far-fetched ideas during the first few stages of restaurant operation. This includes idealistic approach in handling customer matters and at the same time, rendering service in the quickest way possible. But being too idealistic blinds us from seeing what can really happen in the real world; when everything starts to roll in.

This is also a crucial time for both employees and the restaurant employer since first impressions usually last and with the help of word of mouth, one good thing gone bad can spread like wild fire. Before you begin on anything and to take on drastic ideas that are just not comforting for your restaurant operations, be sure that you know the consequences that are going to happen. Cite out all angles and opportunities of failure no matter how comforting you think it is going to be for your investment.

Literally, these things just mean that going for an approach to serve your customer still boils down to how convenient your customer service scheme is as how it is perceived by your customers. Thinking about putting all the tissues, ketchup, straws, gravy etc in one corner and informing the customer to fetch it themselves if they need one isn’t a very good customer service. Yes, it’s convenient for you and your staff but put yourself in the shoes of one customer. Just one. Ask yourself how would this appeal to you if you were the customer.

It doesn’t matter whether you have all the latest gadgets and gizmos in your restaurant to impress your customers. At the end of the day, they will still remember how good you or your staff had been to them and if you were, this is already an enough reason for them to come back.

A plan for building your restaurant will need to include an estimate of star up costs and ongoing expenses. This is the most important item, after obtaining required permits and a tax ID number. If you want to start from scratch it can cost you $300,000 or more. This means you will need to buy everything, from stoves to chairs. You will need to check the reliability of any equipment included in the price, and negotiate the lease price before you can figure the cost of start up.

A plan for building your restaurant will also need to include– a budget for money collection and accounting, advertising, stock and necessities like triple sets of linen, utensils, dish and glassware for every seat in the house. You know that you want your restaurant well equipped, but will you really need to purchase all those new pieces of stainless steel equipment to open your restaurant? Or will you be able to get by with existing or used equipment until your restaurant shows a good cash flow?
A plan for building your restaurant will also need to consider ongoing expenses. Depending on the size and concept of your restaurant, the cost of food will set you back about 25% to $40% of your revenue. Paying your employees will take another 20% to 25%, and rent or payments will be at least 8%. After taxes and other necessary expenses you will be lucky to end up with a clear 5% of the profit.

Even if you don’t think you will need to use it, it may be a wise move to open a line of credit with a local bank. This will help you establish credibility when you do need to purchase bigger items or open another restaurant in the future.

The three most important performance metrics that need to be included in a plan for building your restaurant are cash flow, the percentage of repeat customers, and staff turnover.

Cash flow should be checked as often as weekly. If you wait to perform this monthly you may have a problem. You will need to put out money for fresh inventory and take care of employee tips daily. You may want to keep track of how your specials are selling and it takes constant

Vigilance to keep track of what works best. Three quarters of your sales will come from repeat customers. The most profitable restaurants work to get at least 60% of their customers to come in at least once a week. This is usually accomplished by the use of coupons, specials, contests and other gimmicks to keep the customer happy. Choosing personable, energetic servers is the biggest key to getting the customer to come back often. There should also be a policy for keeping your best employees happy when you are making a plan for building your restaurant. Staff turnover can be a huge problem when running a restaurant.

Do you enjoy people and love to cook? If so you may be contemplating opening up your own restaurant. However, you need to find out if you have what it takes to operate a successful restaurant. There is so much more that takes place behind the scenes than just offering quality service and delicious foods.

You really need to have everything working well before you open the doors to your restaurant. You can be sure those that come in are going to pass along information about their experience. While you will continually need to tweak the way your restaurant is operating don’t open it without having some great concepts already in place. If you do there is an excellent chance many people will only visit your restaurant once. You want them to enjoy the overall experience so much that they will make it a regular place they frequent when they go out to eat.

Even if you have excellent skills for running a successful restaurant, you can’t do it all on your own. You are going to have to hire employees to help you and that is one area you want to dedicate plenty of time to. Look for those with some basic restaurant business and a willingness to learn. You also want to look at their mannerisms and how they interact with people. Those skills are hard to teach so focus on finding employees with such skills. Take the time to contact their past employers and references as well because this will offer you some information the applicant isn’t likely to share with you.

It can be a daunting task to interview employees and follow up with the information they provide you. Yet this has proven to be a necessary step if you want to operate a successful restaurant. Make sure you ask the right questions during the interview process too so you can get a good idea of the work ethic and motivation that the person has to offer.

Even though you want the employees to take your restaurant business seriously, they need to have some fun too. Let their creativeness help you make your business a success. Be open to their ideas and suggestions so they feel like they are a part of the business. They will work harder for you when they feel like it is more than just a job they go to. The will be more likely to show up for their shifts and to stay employed with you for a long time if they are happy on the job.
Putting a new waitress on the floor during a lunch rush isn’t going to be effective for your business. She is likely to become very frazzled and lose confidence in here abilities. At the same time you are going to have annoyed customers that are hungry. Many of them only have a limited amount of time for lunch too and then they have to get back to work.

Having your own restaurant is one of the most fulfilling and enjoyable business ventures. Food is a renewable commodity. This means that people won’t stop looking for different sources of food because dining out is entertaining as well as functional.

Many people dream of owning their own restaurants, whether it is fast food, coffee shops or gourmet. In reality, many people fail to sustain their restaurants and most of them die during their first year of operation. This is due to the lack of preparation and dedication on the part of the owner. Many people jump into the industry too fast without really weighing the pro’s and con’s of the project or having the necessary expertise.

However, there is a way to lessen the risk that is associated with new ventures such as restaurants. Preventive planning and proper management are keys towards success but there are also small things which count in the whole process of owning a restaurant.

Every business needs a business plan. Business plans are meant to lay down the different conditions and characteristics that should be inherent in the business. The availability of a good business plan which has been carefully formulated is a step towards success. You will find information about creating a business plan in an upcoming chapter, however, some points to consider are :
- Crystal clear description of the concept of the restaurant
The objective and the general description of the concept of the restaurant need to be specific. This will give a general overview of what the restaurant intends to do and for whom it intends to do it. The concept of the restaurant needs to be established because it is the core idea by which everything else will follow.

There are many things to be considered in designing the overall concept of the restaurant (excluding food) such as:
What type of restaurant do you want?
What special features would it have which would set it aside from all the other similar restaurants in town? What’s the overall selling factor of the restaurant?
-Target market
The restaurant’s target market needs to be identified. No single restaurant should try to aim at targeting all kinds of people. Even fast food restaurants have a specific target market, even though it may seem at first that it caters to people of all walks of life.
